Five days in Azerbaijan where Persian, Soviet and futuristic Baku meet the Caspian Sea. Walk the UNESCO old city of Icherisheher, see the Flame Towers at dusk, the mud volcanoes of Gobustan and the fire temple of Ateshgah, then finish with mountain air at Shahdag or Gabala.
Arrive Heydar Aliyev International and transfer to your hotel. Evening orientation walk along Baku Boulevard, the long Caspian promenade, with the Flame Towers glowing above the skyline.
Morning inside Icherisheher, the walled old city. Visit the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshah Palace complex. Lunch in Nizami Street. Afternoon: Heydar Aliyev Center exterior by Zaha Hadid, Carpet Museum and funicular up to Highland Park for the best city view.
Drive south to Gobustan National Park for prehistoric rock engravings and the visitor museum. Continue to the nearby mud volcano field. Afternoon back toward Baku for Ateshgah Fire Temple and Yanar Dag, the hillside of natural eternal flames fed by gas vents.
Full-day excursion to Shahdag or Gabala depending on season. Cable cars, alpine meadows and winter snow at Shahdag, or lakeside and mountain scenery around Tufandag in Gabala. Return to Baku for your final night.
