Fly into Kushok Bakula Rimpochee (IXL) โ altitude shift from sea level to 3,500 m. Mandatory full day of rest. Transfer to your Leh guesthouse. Drink plenty of water, no alcohol, avoid exertion. Evening: short stroll in Leh Market, watch sunset from Shanti Stupa (short drive). Early dinner, early sleep.
Gentle day of acclimatisation sightseeing within the Indus Valley. Morning: Thiksey Monastery (nicknamed 'mini Potala' for its resemblance to Lhasa) โ be there for 7 AM prayer if you can. Hemis Monastery โ the largest and wealthiest in Ladakh. Shey Palace for views of the Indus. Afternoon: Leh Palace (9-storey 17th-century fort), Shanti Stupa. Evening at leisure.
Morning drive north over Khardung La pass (5,359 m, one of the highest motorable roads in the world). Photo stop at the top, brief visit only due to altitude. Descend to Nubra Valley โ Diskit Monastery with its 32-m golden Maitreya Buddha. Check into a Hunder tent camp. Late afternoon: Bactrian double-humped camel ride across the Hunder sand dunes (astonishing โ sand dunes at 3,000 m).
Long scenic drive via Shyok river route (6-7 hrs) to Pangong Tso โ the 134-km, ultra-blue salt lake at 4,350 m (one-third in India, two-thirds in China). Arrive by afternoon. Walk along the lakeshore, photograph the colour shifts at sunset. Overnight at Pangong tent camp or guesthouse at Spangmik village.
Catch sunrise over Pangong. Breakfast, then drive back to Leh via Chang La pass (5,360 m) โ even higher than Khardung La. Stops at Hemis National Park views (snow leopard country in winter), Chemrey Monastery. Arrive Leh evening. Hot shower, relaxed dinner.
Day trip west of Leh on the Srinagar highway. Magnetic Hill (optical illusion โ your car appears to roll uphill), Sangam (the confluence of the turquoise Indus and milky Zanskar rivers), Hall of Fame (Indian Army museum), Pathar Sahib Gurudwara. Alchi Monastery with its 1,000-year-old Kashmiri-influenced murals. Return to Leh. Shopping on Main Bazaar.
