Fly into Paro (PBH) โ one of the world's most dramatic landings, threading between 5,500-m peaks. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines only. Transfer to your Paro hotel. Afternoon: visit the Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum in the old watchtower. Evening arrival blessing at the hotel.
Early start for the Taktsang Monastery climb โ 900 m elevation gain over 3 hours up (less coming down), built in 1692 into a sheer cliff face. Options to break the climb at the teahouse viewpoint halfway. Packed lunch at the top. Descend by mid-afternoon. Kyichu Lhakhang (7th century, Bhutan's oldest temple) on the drive back. Hot stone bath treatment in the evening.
Drive 1.5 hrs to Thimphu, the world's only capital with no traffic lights. Afternoon: Buddha Dordenma (51-m golden bronze Buddha on the hill), Memorial Chorten (4-storey stupa for the 3rd King), Motithang Takin Preserve (Bhutan's chimeric national animal). Evening at the Clock Tower Square.
Morning drive east over the Dochula Pass (3,150 m) โ 108 chortens built on a ridge with a clear-day panorama of the Himalayas including Gangkar Puensum (Bhutan's highest, and the highest unclimbed peak in the world). Descend to the warm Punakha valley. Lunch. Afternoon: Chimi Lhakhang, the divine-madman fertility temple, walk through rice paddies. Overnight at a valley lodge.
Morning: Punakha Dzong โ 'Palace of Great Happiness' at the confluence of the Pho and Mo Chhu (male and female rivers). The 2nd oldest and most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. Cross the 160-m Punakha suspension bridge over the river. Afternoon: optional river rafting (grade 2-3) on the Mo Chhu. Farmhouse dinner with ara (local rice spirit) and traditional Bhutanese red rice.
Morning drive back to Paro (5 hrs). Afternoon at leisure โ browse the Paro handicrafts market (textiles, thangka paintings), or Drukgyel Dzong ruins. Early flight next morning from Paro.
